These worms ran rampant before service pack 2 of windows XP was released, and even now some system online don’t have the appropriate updates to prevent infection.
Apple’s Operating System Mac OS X and the various flavors of Linux Operating System can contract Viruses even though they are rarer then a Virus on a windows machine.
There are many tools available to clean Viruses, a good portion of those are available for free. If Used properly they can do a great job of cleaning up most Virus problems.

-BSOD (Blue Screen of Death)
