A Network is composed of multiple connected computers that communicate over a wired or wireless medium to share data and other resources.
Most Cable, DSL, FIoS or other Broadband connections use a router to allow multiple computers to access one internet service. The method most commonly used is Network Address Translation or NAT.
Wireless Networking is a must if you have a Laptop or PDA that has Internet features (802.11a/b/g). It allows you to freely move around without the need of a network cable running to your machine.
Wireless Security
Wireless Networks are, by default, insecure – due to the signal being broadcast over the air. This is why encryption is very important.
- WEP and WPA are two common methods of encryption. WEP or Wired Equivalency Protocol is not considered secure since it can be cracked in less than 3 minutes (Video).
- WPA, or Wi-Fi Protected Access, provides more security to wireless networks than a WEP security set up – and is currently the best method of encryption.
- MAC address filtering prevents machines that you have not added to your list of allowed systems from even connecting to your network.
- And finally, a good Firewall will help with security breaches, which can help to fix security problems in some wireless networks that are more vulnerable.
Mobile Internet
Most mobile phone providers offer Internet access over their networks – allowing you to connect to the internet from any location that can receive a cell phone signal. The lower the signal the less speed you get off of their network. If you require internet on the go this is probably the best method as it does not require a “hot spot” or a wired connection.
We are available to setup any of these types of network at your home or business. Contact us for a free evaluation of your needs.
